The Interconnected North: Decolonizing the Spaces of Communication

Naureen Mumtaz

Digital story

North is commonly understood in different Indigenous cultures as the starting point for locating one’s self in the vastness of our challenging surroundings. The journey to locate north begins with spotting the North Star. Different stars in the Great Bear assist in finding the North Star by giving clues where it might be located on the immense stretch of the visible night skies. Through my auto-ethnographical digital storytelling piece, I problematize this notion of “north” in the context of my navigation through interdisciplinary design and curriculum studies to envision ways to provoke inter-cultural communication amongst the urban Aboriginal and newcomer immigrant youth from “visible minorities” in Edmonton, Alberta.
