Subversively Northern by Design: Minnesota Congratulates Alberta

Like Alberta, the American state of Minnesota has a strong identity with the North. While climate and location are the basis of this, history, pride, culture, a stable economy and an evolving ‘sense of self’ enabled by new immigrants contribute to identity. At Alberta’s and Minnesota’s flagship universities, design education contributes to identity —through professional practice, through research, through creative production. Subversively Northern by Design: Minnesota Congratulates Alberta is an installation of 75+ congratulatory hand-written postcards—all sent through the mail—that recreate the shape of Minnesota. Ranging from touristy clichés to unique artworks, they have literally traveled north.
